What are the benefits of children’s rights and how does this help society?
The European Commission Justice conducted a social experiment in 2010, and interviewed over two thousand children from all over Europe, asking their thoughts on children’s rights. Participants ranging from the age of fifteen to seventeen answered and the accessibility of health services, education, support networks and technology were often talked about in a positive light. They appreciated that society has advanced, allowing more opportunities to experience new things.
“Everything is more reachable for us than it used to be for our parents and grandparents.” “Everything is more at hand. There is no control like it used to be.” (Slovenia, girl) “We have none of the politically-imposed limits our parents had.” (Czech Republic, boy) Children rights are beneficial and crucial in society, as it is the basic platform of equality and freedom for children. Article two in the Conventions on the Rights of the Child, highlights that rights must apply to all children without exception, and Article fourteen encourages the freedom of thought and opinion. Article fourteen further expresses that adults should not undermine the voice of a child, and children should be taken seriously in decisions that affect them. Children’s rights are important because they help society create safer and happier communities. This allows children to live in a nurturing environment and grow up to their full potential. |
